This week's anonymously submitted question is:
How do I promote my apps and myself on social media when I don't like social media?
Marketing, in general, is challenging for those who are mostly experienced in development. We’re great at building apps, and we might be good enough to work out a design and UX that works, but you’ll also have to wear the hat of a marketing manager when building personal apps.
It happens that I just finished Module 5 of my
From Side Project to Going Indie course titled “Marketing and Audience Growth”. The module contains four episodes and dives deeper into building an audience, growing products with several funnels, and using relationships to your advantage.
With influencer marketing growing these days, it might feel like social media is the only place to promote your apps. It depends on the app you build and where you can reach your audience, but there are other ways to grow.
For me personally, I did a lot to make
RocketSim grow. Besides social media, I have many other funnels including blog articles, RocketSim documentation that’s being indexed by search engines, conference sponsorships, paid advertisements, this newsletter, affiliates, and more (all funnels are shared in detail in my course).
In other words, try to see if you can build several products for the same audience. Doing so allows you to become visible to potential users in multiple places. Combining a blog, newsletter, Reddit posts, and other content places enable you to create multiple funnels. Ideally, you would catch a way to stay connected with these users by collecting their emails or allowing them to create an account. This way, you can retarget potential customers and make them use your product later if they didn’t decide to do so initially.
Once again, your promotion techniques should be based on where your target audience lives. And finally: combine multiple marketing funnels diversify your efforts.
