This week's submitted question is by
Marko:
What are the best ways to find a new job as an iOS Dev with 1.5 years of working experience?
Finding a job might not be the most challenging part; getting a job is. The latter depends on your presence, experience, skills, and also: luck. Mentioning luck might be controversial, but there are scenarios where you are the best out of all potential candidates, while in other cases, you’re battling against candidates with much more experience.
What I’d like to say is that you should always be ready to get rejected for a job and that it doesn’t mean you’re not a great engineer. There are parts of job interviews you can’t influence, but you should be prepared for all other parts as much as you can. That means: knowing the company, preparing good questions, challenging the job position (you’re also finding out whether the job is a good fit for you!), and taking a good read of what the company’s looking for. I’ve had many candidates apply for a job at WeTransfer, thinking that we transfer money: instant rejection.
It sounds rough, but the fact is: if you don’t even know what the company does, why would you deserve that job?
With that all in mind, you need to have a way to find a specific job. I’d love to mention
iOS Dev Jobs by
Dave Verwer, which seems to be the best place to find a collection of open positions. Another thing you can try is to mention on socials that you’re open to new challenges. If you have a bit of a following, you could reach connections behind connections. Finally, see if you can find companies you like and go to their job board. It would be best if you were lucky here, but I’ve seen it happening.
