This week's anonymously submitted question is:
How do you know if you're a good enough developer in the industry?
This is such a great question! You’ll make the most of your career depending on how you reflect on your skills.
I’ve seen colleagues stick at a company without fulfilling their potential. I noticed their skills and knew they could easily work at a larger company with better compensation. The question is whether you want this, but if you do and you’re not taking the step because you’re not convinced you can, it’s a missed opportunity.
I can’t tell you whether you’re a good enough developer: what is good enough depends on what you want to achieve. Being good enough to work at Apple could mean something different than being good enough to work at a small agency. It could also be that you won’t get a job at the agency while you would at Apple. It’s all about whether you’re a good match with the right competencies.
What I mean to say is this: if you doubt, believe in yourself. If you doubt, believe that you are good enough! Apply for that job, take the interview, and trust that you’re good enough until proven differently. If you turn out not to get the job, don’t stop. So many engineers get rejected, and it should only be taken as the start of a new journey. A rejection doesn’t mean you’re not good enough; it solely means you’re not the right candidate for this offer.
Invest in your knowledge and yourself, and I’m sure you’ll be good enough to achieve whatever you want.
